10 Tips to Improve Your Job Search Results for 2019

By December 31, 2018 February 4th, 2019 Career Tips, Job Search Tips

Do you have career change on your mind for 2019? If so, you’re not alone!

Whether you are thinking about finding a new job or contemplating a career shift to another field, the start of a new year is actually a good time to embark upon your search. Making a career change ranks high on many people’s lists of New Year’s resolutions. A large spike in people searching online job boards, reaching out to contacts on various social platforms and applying for new positions has marked the first week in January over the last three years.

So the good news for job seekers is that many people are looking and planning to leave their current positions, which in turn creates turnover and an enormous number of openings. The number of people leaving their jobs voluntarily worldwide has been increasing steadily. Once the impact of these resignations is felt, many companies will be searching for new talent to fill these vacant slots and it is expected to create a very robust job market in a wide range of industries.

However, while making a New Year’s resolution for career change and success can be the beginning of a wonderful new chapter in our lives, it’s really just the first step. More importantly, do you have a plan for achieving them?

Below, I’ve highlighted 10 of my top tips to improve your job search results for 2019.

1. Make sure the top 1/3 of your résumé is a qualifications profile/summary that emphasizes what you can do for the employer.

2. Your résumé must be specifically targeted for the type of position you’re seeking — a generic résumé won’t do.

3. After you’ve identified a specific job title that you’re pursuing, collect and analyse 3-5 job postings for this type of position.

4. Be sure to focus on how you can add value to a prospective employer — and then get your résumé in the hands of someone who can hire you.

5. To increase your chances of securing an interview, you need to identify who the hiring manager is and get your résumé to him/her directly.

6. One of the best ways to reach the hiring manager is through people you already know — and/or the people they know.

7. Identify the people you already know who can help introduce you to the people you need to get to know in order to move forward with your job search.

8. Make a list of all of your contacts — past employers, vendors, customers, colleagues, competitors, bankers, and others — who can help you with your job search.

9. Set up a separate email address that you only use for your job search. Use Gmail or — better yet — your own name as your domain name (like [email protected]).

10. One of the best sources of information for your job search is a professional résumé writer. When in doubt about something you’ve heard or read about, ask!
